Among SAE chapters, Mississippi Gamma was the 17th chapter founded among 250 chapters that are in existence today. This makes SAE one of the largest fraternities in the nation. Leadership has been a prominent feature of Mississippi Gamma since it's founding by the distinguished statesman L. Q. C. Lamar, who would later server as a Mississippi Senator and Supreme Court Justice. In years past, Mississippi Gamma has earned several awards from National Headquarters. The chapter was given the Most Improved Chapter Award and coveted Zeal Award. This fraternity is proud to have other leaders of national significance, such as Haley Barbour, former Chairman of the Republican National Committee. One of the most influential writers of the 20th Century was a member of our brotherhood. William Faulkner, who attended Ole Miss after the first World War, was initiated into our chapter 30 years before he won a Nobel Prize in literature. The men of Mississippi Gamma believe that brotherhood and leadership are two of the most important aspects of the fraternity. With these two values rest the foundations for lifetime friendships and knowledge that will help guide each member for the rest of his life.
For nearly 130 years Mississippi Gamma chapter of SAE has been a solid institution at Ole Miss and on Fraternity Row. The brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon are 100 of the finest men in the South who excel in all areas of campus life - including athletics, student government, and philanthropy.
Between the gawkiness of early adolescence and the dignity of full manhood we find a creation known as the SAE. He comes in assorted sizes, weights, and ages, but all seem to have the same creed -- to enjoy every minute of every hour of every day, to anticipate forthcoming weekends, to engage in all night bull sessions, to do the wrong thing at the right time, and the right thing at the wrong time, to spend extravagantly, to complain incessantly, and to work together as brothers.
An SAE is truth with lipstick on his collar, beauty adulterated only by a sweatshirt and cutoffs, wisdom with a beer in his hand, hope for the future with a date on his arm. He likes wheels, girls, parties, Jack D in the Black, unlimited cuts, McDonald's and the Rack. He is not much for blind dates, final exams, the judicial council, or getting up early.
In the SAE house you will find a conglomeration of all sorts of characters -- politicians, brains, goof-offs, athletes and ex-athletes, face men, hell raisers, and he-men. Nobody else gets so much fun out of a joke or a TV program. Nobody else can sleep as much, eat as much, drink as much, date as much, clown as much, and enjoy life as much.
Mothers love them. Fathers finance them. Other boys envy them. Girls glorify them. Heaven protects them...And the rest are divided on the subject.
